The Scarlet Thread

The Scarlet Thread of God’s redemption
Weaving  grace throughout the years,
Brings hope to those who place their trust
 In Him who quells our fears.

    It happened again this week.   The sad news of another high school classmate who slipped into eternity leaving behind a heartbroken wife, children and grandchildren.    He was an honorable  man who was loved and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

   Just last week my daughter Angie and I were discussing the brevity of life and how within  just a couple of generations our remembrance will  not even be a  blip on the radar.   And yet in our  blindness we have each created our own little universe revolving around ourselves.

    This point was powerfully driven home several years ago when I researched  our family  history and  visited the graves of  some of  our  ancestors.    Graves of people that no one visits anymore.   Graves of  people who came and went  and won’t be remembered unless some curious genealogist stumbles upon them only to be  forgotten again  by the end of the day.

"Yet you do not know
what your life will be like tomorrow.
You are just a vapor
that appears for a little while and then vanishes away."
James 4:4

   This can be pretty depressing can’t it?    These words of James should cause us  to consider  how we’re spending our time each day.     My life has  flown by at lightning speed and  I   still manage to fritter away  precious  time  with things that  pull  me away from my devotion to Christ.    The only legacy I can leave behind is  to pass the baton of the Gospel to those around me who will carry it onto the  next generation.       The Scarlet Thread that has been woven throughout every generation  is the Gospel of Grace found in Jesus Christ  which brings  hope for today and eternal life to  all  who believe in  Him.

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth,
before the evil days come
and the years draw near when you will say,
"I have no delight in them";
Ecclesiastes 12:1

O death, where is thy sting?
O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin;
and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren,
be ye stedfast, unmoveable,
always abounding in the work of the Lord,
forasmuch as ye know that your labour
is not in vain in the Lord.
I Corinthians 15: 55-5

  1. Diane this is such an important post. We need to remember that our lives are like the vapor...here today and gone tomorrow. Therefore, we do need to take account of our lives daily. Thank you for sharing this and reminding us that passing on the Gospel is the most important legacy we can leave with our children and friends.

  3. How precious it is to rest on the work of Christ, for we have none of our own to save us. And how wonderful that in spite of us, the Lord gives us the privilege of carrying on the Gospel of Christ as He gathers in His sheep before time closes.
