“Satan’s sin as far as
we can see, consisted of two evils. Firstly,
there was his pride against the person of the Son of God by whom he was created
(Col.1:16). This was the start of his
transgression. Secondly, there was his
envy against all mankind, made in the image of God, the Son of God the
first-born. This completed his
sin. Nothing was now left for him to
lift himself proudly up against, nor to vent his malice on. To Satan’s eternal confusion and ruin, God is
his infinite wisdom united both the natures he had sinned against in the one
person of the Son, who was the first object of his pride and malice. By this his destruction is accompanied with
everlasting shame in the revelation of his foolishness in attempting to
overthrow infinite wisdom, as well as his misery in being overthrown himself by
the power of the two natures united in one person.
This is the glory on which lies the
foundation of the church. The
foundation of the whole of creation was laid in an act of absolute sovereign
power, when God ‘hung the earth on nothing’.
But the foundation of the church is on this mysterious, immovable rock
of the union of the divine and human natures in one person, Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. Here the whole church must fall down and
worship the God who laid this wonderful foundation.” ~ John Owen

This is one of the books I started and put down. I need to pick it up again.
ReplyDeleteJust this morning I was reading Isaiah's account of Lucifer's fall. For some reason, this time, heading into the Resurrection season, has so much more meaning for me. I wonder...
