Friday The 13th And The $100 Wedding

Today Robert and I  share  the joy of celebrating 39 years of God's Faithfulness together.    We were married on Friday the 13th of July in 1973 and this is only the 8th time it's fallen on a Friday.    Barely knowing each other,  we married following  a  brief  2 month courtship  by mail.   We had met in  high school but our paths didn't cross  again until several years later when we were living  in two different states.

What we did  know though is that we loved each other and that we shared  a budding new  faith in Jesus Christ.    We were still hippies but it's true .... you can't always judge a book by its cover!   Thankfully, God meets us all where we're at when He sets us in process.

I've  kept all of our love letters and some of them are pretty funny.    For instance, I had requested   ABSOLUTELY NO FLOWERS!   -- after all, doesn't it make perfect sense not to "kill something for the sake of a ceremony"?   I wonder if God was laughing when I wrote that!

The wedding took place at a  beautiful spot in the woods near  Lake Tahoe  and  the whole shabang cost around $100  which included  -

  • My dress: (which I made):  $12
  • Our rings:  His - $20 and Mine - $10  (which I still wear proudly!)
  • The preacher: $25 - (A good Baptist)
  • The food:  about $40 -  (Vegetarian of course -which my  dear mom and I  made - including the whole wheat carrot wedding cake)

Here's the postcard my Knight in Shining Armor sent me when he popped the question:

And this was in the last letter I sent to him the week before we got married.     I was  21  and  God has answered this simple  prayer over and above what I could have imagined!
I posted this little tribute to my wonderful husband last year.   Since then God has blessed us with two new additions to the family - little  Lydia from Thailand and sweet baby Huey.

  9. What a wonderful story of your love for one another and how you began your journey with Christ at the center! It has been a journey for us too Diane. I think when we all look back on the things we said or did...we chuckle but we thank the Lord for leading us so faithfully through it all. May you and your wonderful husband be richly blessed as you celebrate another year of His grace and blessing in your lives together!
