The Importance Of Renewing Our Confidence In The Infallibility Of Scripture

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching,
for reproof,  for correction, and for training in righteousness,
that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV

Satan’s primary method of operation from the beginning has been to cast doubt on God’s Word.
“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.    He said to the woman, “Did God actually say,..?”  Genesis 3:1

If the Devil can’t succeed in deceiving us regarding a particular area of doctrine he will often go for the throat and cause us to doubt the very reliability of the Written Word.    Indeed, this works well on unbelievers, for didn’t many of us say before God opened our eyes, something to the effect that “The Bible has been changed too many times to be able to believe it” or, “there are so many different translations that none of them can be trusted”?    Surely we all continue to hear these kinds of  misconceptions from friends and loved ones even now.

The study of Bibliolgy is a topic within the entire study known as Systematic Theology.   Systematic theology gathers all of the information throughout the Bible on any given doctrine and places each under its own heading while at the same time demonstrating the unity of the whole.   If you’d like to learn a little more about this please see   "A Brief Introduction To Systematic Theology"

“Bibliology” is the fascinating study of how we got our Bible and why we can completely trust most of the translations we have in our hands today.     One of the surest ways for me to combat doubt is to review why God’s Word is entirely true,  reliable, and can be proven to be so based on a careful study of both internal and external evidence.

Last year at this time Theology For Girls  ran  a series under “Thursday Theology” on  "How We Got Our Bible" and over the next 5 weeks  we will be revisiting this series.   These brief studies cover the means in which God has used to impart and preserve His Word that include;  revelation, inspiration, inerrancy, preservation, canonicity, The Dead Sea Scrolls, transmission of the Old and New Testaments and how we got our various translations.      If these words sound intimidating please  don’t worry, these posts are designed to be short,  understandable, and hopefully interesting.   Additionally, they will include plenty of extra resources if you want to dig deeper into each sub topic.

Won’t you  please consider visiting us on Thursdays for this incredible faith strengthening look at  how it is that we can  hold the very Word of Life in our hands!    This is no mere dry academic study, rather, it should produce a sense of deep astonishment and wonder in our hearts.    And please do invite your friends along!
Yours For His Kingdom!

  1. It is so important that we truly believe in the inerrancy and infallibility of Scripture. Without that foundation we have no assurance of salvation and will end up being "blown about by every wind of doctrine." I think its important, too, to remember that it is there for us to understand. The post-modern/Emergent church of today often claims that we CAN'T know Scripture. If that were true, we would also have no hope.
I'm looking forward to this series - thank you!

  4. Jessica - Thanks so much for your kind words of encouragement. You're so right that many in the Emergent church have laid an attack against the Word of God.

  6. Wonderful thoughts today Diane! I love that Scripture and you are so right....Satan tries to put doubt in our minds about the goodness of God and the truth of His Word. This is why it is so important for us to be bathed in His Word daily and know what it really says so we can tell Satan to take a hike! Thank you dear friend!
